Late Archaic Shell Ring Repository (LASRR)
This project began during a field season on St. Catherines Island, GA. In reading through the literature regarding the Late Archaic shell rings of the southeastern United States, it became apparent that there had been anthropolgical work conducted on the rings spanning a period of more than 150 years. Furthermore, much of this work was scattered throughout the literature in various formats such as presentations at conferences, journal articles, portions of largers studies, large-scale WPA projects, NRHP and NHL applications, and so on. Throughout the years there have been various attempts at both collecting and/or centralizing these data and information (Hemmings 1969, 1970a,b; Lawrence 1989a,b,c, 1991a,b; see references) yet, only very recently had most of the data from these projects been centralized into a single and accessable source (Russo 2006; see references) despite the ongoing debate about the function of the rings themselves.
Following the lead of other database projects, such as the Paleoindian Database of the Americas (PiDBA), and now more recently the Digital Index of North American Archaeology (DINAA), this database was constructed with the express purpose of making the wide array of North American, Late Archaic, shell ring data more easily accessible to all researchers with the hope that it will encourage both discourse and future projects.
As always with online databases, this database and webpage are a continuing work in progress. As new data is made available to the author, the database will be updated accordingly. Furthrmore, now that much of the data from the shell rings of the Late Archaic period have been collected and entered, the database is currently being expanded to include information from the Woodland period shell rings. Furthermore, additions and suggestions for the database are always welcome.
Below are the accumulated data that comprise the LASRR. Each of the 'Artifact' buttons, and the 'Radiocarbon Dates', 'Dimensions and Measurements', and 'NRHP-NHL Statuses' buttons will immediately download the appropraite database that come in the form of a single Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
The 'Site Maps and Imagery' button and the 'Individual Ring Reports' button will each (eventually) link to a seprate page that will then provide links to each of the individual shell rings. Both of these sites are still under construction.
The 'References' button will immediately download a PDF of a current list of references that address the Late Archaic shell rings of the North American southeast.
Additional reference information for the shell rings can be found via the Digital Index of North American Archaeology (DINAA). Location data is not provided within this database. For location data please contact the appropriate State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO's).
